Case Study: Waypoint Information Services
If one considers the shipment of D-RAM chips where one pallet is worth more than $10 million, it is clear that the load needs to be accurately tracked at all times. The problem is that many current tracking systems lack the flexibility to be able to adapt to a changing environment or else involve extremely expensive and unnecessary GPS solutions.
Waypoint Information Systems seeks to solve this dilemma by offering a flexible and cost effective solution utilizing mobile phones. A simple SMS message relayed by the truck driver is routed directly into a Waypoint system and then displayed on a dynamic map.
The role for GIStance was to create a interactive map or a “DynaGIS” that Waypoint could use to display the relevant mobile phone SMS data. Referring to Figure A and B below, one can see a basic map that shows the locations of trucks in transit in the U.K. By using a DynaGIS, Waypoint was able to manage the location of its customer’s trucks using a few simple pictures.
